Short description
Langston University is located in the rural area of Langston, Oklahoma, and stands proud as the only HBCU in Oklahoma. Founded in 1897, it emerged during a time when African Americans were barred from attending higher education institutions in the Oklahoma territory. Recognizing the need for educational advancement within their community, Black citizens united to petition for a college in Langston. The request was eventually granted, but with the condition that the land for the college had to be purchased by the citizens themselves. Through picnics, auctions, and bake sales, these determined citizens raised enough money to buy the land within a year.
Today, Langston University has an enrollment of 1,903 students and offers a wide range of academic programs from certificates to Doctoral degrees, covering diverse academic interests and career paths. Popular majors include Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, Urban Education, International Studies, and unique fields like Goat Research and Biotechnology. The university also offers a notable doctoral program in Physical Therapy, underscoring its commitment to advanced professional education.
The motto "Education for Service" reflects Langston's mission to educate and motivate its students to serve their communities and the broader world. The vibrant campus life features the Lions & Lady Lions, who compete in NAIA Division I within the Sooner Athletic Conference. Langston University continues to uphold its tradition of excellence, preparing students to lead and innovate in an increasingly global society.
