Short description
Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA), founded in 1967, is a vibrant part of Louisiana's higher education system and a proud member of the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) community. Established during a period of significant social change in the United States, SUSLA was created to provide quality higher education and professional training to a diverse student population, focusing on African-American students in the Shreveport area.
Today, SUSLA is a 2-year public junior college that caters to over 3,000 students, offering a variety of Associate's degrees. The college is known for its strong programs in Nursing, Liberal Arts and Humanities, Dental Hygiene, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT Paramedic), and Phlebotomy Technician. These programs focus on high-demand fields.
Athletically, SUSLA competes in the NJCAA Division I, region #23, with its teams known as the Jaguars. The college's mascot, the Jaguar, symbolizes the strength, agility, and determination that SUSLA instills in its students. Located in a city setting with campus housing available, SUSLA offers an academically stimulating environment that supports student life. The college's motto, "Opportunity Starts Here," reflects its commitment to opening doors for students through education, enabling them to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to society.
