Short description
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), established in 1956, is a significant institution in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Its founding responded to the growing demand for higher education opportunities for African-American students in the New Orleans area during the civil rights era. Since its inception, SUNO has played a pivotal role in providing accessible and quality education, particularly to minority students in the region.
Currently, SUNO is a dynamic 4-year public institution serving approximately 1,950 students. The university offers a diverse range of academic programs, including Associate's, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees and Postbaccalaureate certificates. Its popular majors in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, and Sciences reflect the institution's commitment to offering relevant and rigorous programs, preparing students for successful careers in various fields.
While SUNO does not have athletic teams participating in traditional sports leagues, it is a member of the NAIA Division in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, and its mascot, the Knight, symbolizes the bravery and perseverance that the university instills in its students. Located in a city setting with campus housing available, SUNO provides a supportive and enriching environment for its students, living up to its motto, "We lead the way." This motto encapsulates the university's ongoing commitment to leadership in education, community engagement, and the empowerment of its students.
