Short description
Morehouse College, located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, is a storied institution with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1867. Initially established as the Augusta Institute by William Jefferson White, an Atlanta Baptist minister, the college was created to educate African-American men in theology and education. It later relocated to Atlanta and was renamed Morehouse College in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, a significant supporter of the institution.
As a private, four-year college, Morehouse has grown to enroll 2,567 students, offering Bachelor's degrees in a variety of fields with popular majors including Business Administration, Political Science, Biology, and Psychology. These programs reflect Morehouse's commitment to academic excellence and the development of leaders who engage critically with the world around them.
Athletically, Morehouse College competes in the NCAA Division II within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SIAC), with its teams known as the Maroon Tigers. This participation in collegiate sports complements the college's academic pursuits, contributing to a well-rounded student experience. The college's motto, "And There Was Light," aptly captures its mission to illuminate the minds and spirits of its students, guiding them towards a path of success and enlightenment. As an iconic institution among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Morehouse College continues to be a beacon of learning, leadership, and service.
